Plumeria is a genus of eleven species of shrubs and small trees in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) native to tropical America from Brazil to Mexico and the Caribbean. With common names of plumeria and frangipani, a few species and hybrids are grown as ornamentals in tropical and sub-tropical areas worldwide for the attractive and fragrant flowers. The name frangipani comes from the name of a 16th century Italian nobleman who created a perfume with a similar scent. Now commonly naturalized in Asia and Pacific Islands, they are often planted in cemeteries or around both Hindu and Buddhist temples.
B. purpurea grows at elevations from about 500 to 2000 metres. It prefers to grow in moist areas with mean annual temperature ranging from 12 to 21ºC and mean annual rainfall between 1000 and 5000 mm. It grows on a variety of sandy, loamy and gravelly soils in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils. It demands plenty of light and requires good drainage. Severe frost kills the leaves of seedlings and saplings. The species is frost-hardy but less drought-hardy than other species of Bauhinia, though flowers best on dry soils.
Lagerstroemia commonly known as crape myrtle also spelled crepe myrtle or crêpe myrtle, and often referred to in technical literature as crapemyrtle, is a genus of around 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs native to the Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and parts of Oceania, cultivated in warmer climates around the world. It is a member of the family Lythraceae, which are also known as the loosestrife family. The genus is named after the Swedish merchant Magnus von Lagerström, a director of the Swedish East India Company who supplied Carl Linnaeus with plants he collected. These flowering trees are beautifully colored and are often planted both privately and commercially as ornamentals.
